The Quarto Group is seeking a Senior Acquiring Editor for our cooking and lifestyle imprints. This position is a team leadership role responsible for commissioning and developing new product in cooking and lifestyle.  The right candidate will help our team meet the overall goal of the Quarto Group to build successful, commercial, high-level publishing programs that reflects current trends within the interest areas of Quarto’s core enthusiast audiences in the competitive landscape of the broader marketplace. This position is based in Beverly MA operating under a hybrid work model (3 days minimum on site). While candidates are preferred to be east coast based, there may be an option for this role to be fully remote for the right candidate. 

Key Results Areas

Acquire and Develop 13-15 Books Annually:

  • Actively propose, acquire, and develop a designated number of titles each year under supervision of the Group Publisher.
  • Hire and liaise with authors, editors, and freelancers to see projects through from concept to completion. 
  • Assist in book budgeting process, including project P&Ls and managing book development costs.
  • Build network of authors and agents to tap for future projects.      
  • Analyze subject areas, markets, and consumer trends in key categories for building a commercially successful publishing list. 
  • Review unsolicited manuscripts and book proposals for possible publication.
  • Present book concepts at editorial, marketing/sales, and acquisitions meetings.  
  • Create and maintain status report of titles in development.
  • Work closely with the authors and the internal design team to shape content, style, and approach of each book. 
  • Coach the author and other contributors during the writing process to keep them on track and on target for delivery.
  • Evaluate authors’ manuscripts and artwork or photography for quality, voice, consistency, and market appropriateness.

Editorial Development:

  • Complete editorial work for projects according to deadlines and as assigned by the Group Publisher. 
  • Communicate with authors, artists, illustrators, and photographers to confirm project parameters and keep them up to date as the book is in production. 
  • Substantive editing of book manuscripts as needed.
  • Research and fact checking for assigned projects, as directed by the Group Publisher. 
  • Research, select, and organize artwork, photos, illustrations, and other materials. 
  • Secure permissions from appropriate parties and/or help the author do so.
  • Prepare and transmit project materials for Design and Production.
  • Oversee freelance project editors

Communication & Collaboration:

  • Work with sales and marketing to ensure strategic planning and scheduling of new items.
  • Collaborate with sales and marketing to maximize internal and external opportunities.
  • Work with marketing to co-create marketing plans and promotional materials.                     
  • Collaborate with design, production, and other staff to ensure all objectives relative to assigned titles are being met.    

Position Specifications

Minimum Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

Required

  • Extensive knowledge of imprint subjects (cooking and lifestyle the most pertinent).
  • Demonstrated ability for organization, precision, and clarity.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office software.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills.
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to manage project to a designated schedule.   

Desired

  • Experience in developing content related to cooking and lifestyle.
  • Familiarity with newer social media and how it relates to marketing and selling books.

Education and Experience

Required

  • 8+ years of experience in a publishing acquisitions role
  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism or English, or equivalent work experience.
